Officials rethink drilling rules after well's collapse

Sinkhole filled with brine now hundreds of feet across

A massive sinkhole near Artesia is prompting the state to re-evaluate rules governing brine wells used in oil and gas production.

The well, on County Road 217 about 17 miles southeast of Artesia, began collapsing last week. In a 24-hour period, it more than doubled in size until it was 300 to 400 feet in diameter, according to Oil Conservation Division engineers.
