Mazatl Galindo, Monte del Sol head coach, isn't sure his full side would still have been enough to defeat Rehoboth Christian, which pinned a 9-0 loss on the Dragons in the first round of the Class A-AAA Boys State Soccer Tournament on Saturday in Gallup.

"We'll never know," Galindo said. "As a coach, I make no excuses. Still, I just wish I had all my guys."

Three Monte del Sol starters were sidelined by a culmination of yellow cards that resulted in a one-match suspension for each. Another starter was hobbled by an injury.

The new-look Dragons never developed cohesiveness, particularly in the first 40 minutes.

"We were discombobulated," Galindo said of the opening half. "They scored in the first two minutes."

By intermission, the gap widened to seven goals.

"They played ball very well," Galindo said of the Lynx. "They have nice touch."

Rehoboth Christian (11-7-1) will face St. Michael's (11-9) in a state quarterfinal Thursday morning at 9 at Rio Rancho High School. The Horsemen arrive as the third seeds. The Lynx are seeded fifth.

"It should be very competitive, very equal," Galindo said.

St. Michael's defeated Monte del Sol 4-0 and 2-1 during the District 2A-AAA season. As one of the top-four seeds, the Horsemen had a first-round bye.

Trailing 7-0 at intermission, Galindo used the break to convince his Dragons (13-8) that one loss does not a season make.

"It was the worst first half we played all season," Galindo said. "But it was the most fun we had in a second half in terms of not letting one game ruin the whole season. Everybody had a positive attitude and came out with high heads."
