Aimee Geyer wears her emotions on her face.

But looks wouldn't suffice Saturday for the St. Michael's High School senior volleyball standout.

During a timeout, Geyer turned to Chela Butler, her head coach, and asked, "Can't they just let the ball fall?"

Geyer's right arm was a perpetual pendulum Saturday because the West Las Vegas defense was the pong to Geyer's ping in a District 2AAA match in Perez-Shelley Gymnasium.

"They were digging her constantly," Butler said. "She kept hitting ... and hitting ... and hitting."

Geyer wasn't alone.

Nicole Murphy swung freely.

As did Amber Tassel and Monique Romero.

The Lady Horsemen eventually got to the Lady Dons, winning the regular season finale 25-23, 25-23, 25-18.

"It's been a long time since we've beaten anybody in three," Butler said.

The last time took place in Gillie Lopez Gymnasium, home of the Lady Dons, on the 10th night of October.

"We talked about how we wanted to win in three," Butler said. "That was nice, heading into the district tournament."

The sweep allowed Butler time to do the 2AAA match. St. Michael's and Raton each finished 5-5 in district. They split head-to-head, each winning in four games. The next tiebreaker is points.

"If I calculated correctly, we should be the third seed and Raton is fourth," Butler said.

That's crucial in the ladder tournament that is 2AAA. The third seed would give the Lady Horsemen the home court for the quarterfinal round. The district meeting is set for Monday morning.

Back to Saturday.

The Lady Dons didn't dig Geyer all the time. The outside hitter, who moved to the middle when Alexa Chavez sprained her MCL, finished with a match-high 17 kills.

"She'll be surprised when she reads that she had that many kills," Butler said.

Murphy complemented Geyer with 13 kills from her outside spot. Tassel contributed a season-high six, while Romero added five.

"It was nice to see us getting kills from everyone," Butler said.

Setters Nicolette Serrao and Samantha McFall dished 21 and 15 assists, respectively, for the Lady Horsemen (11-9).

The down-to-the-last-serve match is something St. Michael's is used to. It also might have been the difference.

"We've had a lot of tight-game experience and that showed," Butler said. "They missed some serves on crucial points in those first two games."

West Las Vegas (6-14, 1-9) is likely the sixth seed for the 2AAA tournament and will visit fifth-seeded Santa Fe Indian School for a first-round match.

Pojoaque Valley 3, Raton 0

For five years, Miquella Lovato was responsible for digging others' spikes.

In the regular season finale, the Class AAA's best libero finally got to swing back.

Lovato, the 5-foot-3 senior, recorded two kills in a 25-8, 25-15, 25-16 District 2AAA victory in Ben Lujan Gymnasium.

"We had fun today," said Brian Ainsworth, Pojoaque Valley head coach. "It was Senior Day."

That meant Lovato hit. As did setter Marissa Romero. Outside hitter Dionna Montoya set, while middle hitter Kira Trujillo played back row.

All are seniors.

"They are the four best volleyball players I've ever coached at their respective positions," Ainsworth said. "We tried to have fun with it and relieve a little of the pressure we'll be under for the next two weeks."

Pojoaque Valley is 19-1 overall, 10-0 in district. The Elkettes, who extended the regular-season district winning streak to 50-0, will be the top seed for the 2AAA tournament, and likely the top seed for the Class AAA State Tournament.

Before the fun, the Elkettes were all business.

"We challenged ourselves going in to seize every opportunity we got," Ainsworth said. "We did a good job of serving, ended up with a lot of free balls and took advantage of those opportunities."

Montoya finished with 12 kills, while Trujillo added 10. Liz Gomez chipped in seven and Tamarra Vigil had four.

Lovato recorded 11 digs, while Cara Salazar had 10. Romero dished 34 assists.

"We did what we needed to do," Ainsworth said. "Now, we're looking forward to the next two weeks."

Los Alamos 3, Capital 0

The Lady Hilltoppers capped an undefeated District 2AAAA season with a 25-20, 25-20, 25-20 victory in Griffith Gymnasium.

Los Alamos (17-3) finished 8-0 in the district and will be the top seed for the postseason tournament that guarantees them the home court and a bye into the championship match. The Lady Hilltoppers also earned one of 12 spots for the Class AAAA State Tournament.

Capital (8-12, 4-4) will be the third seed for the 2AAAA tournament. The Lady Jaguars await the winner of the first-round match between Bernalillo and Taos. Española Valley is the second seed.

"Even though the outcome wasn't what we would have hoped for, I was pleased with the girls' efforts," Natalie Garcia, Capital head coach, said. "They played with a lot of heart and hustle.

"Los Alamos is number one in the district and we could have easily folded. They have that confidence that we don't have consistently. That's what pushes them over the top. But my girls decided to leave it all out there."

Sarah Romero finished with five kills for the Lady Jaguars, which was one more than Stephanie Oellien. Rocio Archuleta had three kills.

Vandora Montoya had 21 digs and Shantel Kilkenny had 15 assists for Capital.

Evangel Christian 3, Desert Academy 0

The Lady Eagles continued their district dominance, capturing the 2A tournament title 26-24, 25-23, 25-20 in Albuquerque.

Evangel Christian (13-3) dropped just one match during the district season and earned the top seed with a playoff win over Victory Christian. Desert Academy (11-13), the third seed, will join the Lady Eagles in next week's Class A State Tournament.

"We showed a little bit of fatigue," Stacy Brossy, Desert Academy head coach, said, referring to wins over Santa Fe Waldorf, New Mexico School for the Deaf and Victory Christian just to reach the final. "We just weren't able to get it done today."

Sasha Vidisheva finished with six kills for the Lady Wildcats, while Maredith Davis and Estrella Flores evenly divided 10.

"Sasha was our go-to player for a while, while Maredith was all over the court," Brossy said. "She was rallying the team and brought us back ahead a couple times. Those last two points didn't go our way."
