The Demons of Santa Fe High want to be a boys soccer team that forces the pressure. On Thursday, they were.
Marcelo Bernardez scored both goals, including one on a breakaway, and the Demons blanked Santa Fe Preparatory 2-0 at Santa Fe High in the Santa Fe City Soccer Tournament.
"Everybody wants to like that," Santa Fe head coach A.J. Herrera said of his team's up-tempo style. "It's never good to sit back and not be aggressive. We really want to be the ones that put pressure on the other team, and we did that today."
Bernardez scored in the 16th minute on an assist from Andrew Borrego. In the 60th minute, Edward Howard got a through ball to Bernardez for a breakaway.
"We were getting the ball to Marcelo's feet and he was able to turn his defenders very nicely," Herrera said. "Edward played a perfect ball through to Marcelo and Marcelo used his speed, got passed his guy and scored one-on one."
The Demons, who recorded 14 shots, are 1-0-1.
"We played really well, we just got unlucky on the goals," Prep head coach Hersch Wilson said.
Prep falls to 1-1.
St. Michael's 7, Santa Fe High 0
Nine seconds is all it took for Jamie Palermo to score the first of three goals in the Santa Fe City Soccer Tournament at Brother Abdon Field.
"I think it might be the fastest," Ed Velie answered, when asked if anyone has scored quicker during his 15-year tenure as St. Michael's head coach.
Palermo scored in the eighth minute and the 46th. Jami Hogan and Liana Coppola gave the Lady Horsemen a 4-0 halftime advantage. Michelle Bustamante and Kate Ayala capped the second-half scoring.
Santa Fe High (0-1) did not put a shot on frame. The credit goes to Coppola.
"It just doesn't seem like anything gets by Coppola," Velie said of his sophomore midfielder. "And something good happens when she releases it."
Palermo now has 10 goals for the Lady Horsemen (4-1). She also collected an assist, as did Hogan, Bridgette Butler, Sophie Brown, Coppola and Caitlin Smith.
Pojoaque 3, Capital 0
The Elkettes no longer need GPS.
Following a season-opening 25-21, 25-17, 25-17 nondistrict victory over Capital in Ben Lujan Gymnasium, Pojoaque knows exactly where it is — and needs to be.
"This got us out of the blocks," Pojoaque head coach Brian Ainsworth said. "We know where we're at, and it gives us some things to work on."
Improvement won't come easily, not after the Elkettes recorded just five hitting errors on 42 kills.
"That's the biggest change I can see in the team from this year to last year," Ainsworth said. Last year, we would have 42 kills and 30-something errors."
Janelle Roybal led Pojoaque with 12 kills, Dionna Montoya had 11 and Leandra Martinez 7. Marissa Romero had 36 assists.
Capital tied Game 1 at 20, but Pojoaque closed out the Lady Jaguars with a 5-1 run to end it.
"I was impressed with Capital's intensity and energy they brought to the game," Ainsworth said.
Regina Ritchie and Destany Montoya combined for 13 kills for Capital, with Ritchie recording a team-high seven. Rocio Archuleta was credited with four blocks for the Lady Jaguars.
Peñasco 3, Mora 2
The Lady Panthers opened their season with a 25-21, 17-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-11 victory over the Rangerettes in a nondistrict match in Peñasco.
The loss squared Mora's record at 1-1.
