The Lady Horsemen of St. Michael's didn't quite heed the words of head coach Ed Velie and Meghan Jerry made them pay the price as Aztec beat
St. Michael's 3-2 in a quarterfinal of the Farmington Cup girls soccer tournament Friday in Farmington.

It was the season opener for both teams.

Jerry scored on a breakaway in the 20th minute and again on a one-on-one with the goalkeeper to give Aztec a 2-0 lead 50 minutes in.

"I told them about her," Velie said. "I guess they didn't believe me. We came out kind of slow."

St. Michael's forward Jamie Palermo scored two goals of her own in the in 62nd and 77th minutes, but Lady Tigers midfielder Casey Johnson had the difference-maker in the 74th minute.

"We talked the talk, but I guess we didn't walk the walk," Velie said.

The Lady Horsemen play Piedra Vista today at 10 a.m. in the consolation bracket.

Rehoboth 5, Santa Fe Preparatory 0

It was an opportunity for a coach to take a good look at her players, but little more.

"I'm kind of making choices this weekend as to who's going to be better served playing with the JV and who can come up and play with us," Santa Fe Preparatory head coach Rennae Ross said, following a defeat to Rehoboth in a quarterfinal of the Farmington Cup.

Deirdra Bia scored two goals for Rehoboth.

It was a season opener for both teams.

"We have a long ways to go," Ross said. "We have to figure out what's best for everybody."

Ross saw to it that nearly everyone who took the trip, saw the pitch as
20 of 22 players played.
