Blue Griffins rout Lady Jaguars

Rennae Ross should change her title from coach to manager.

The head girls soccer coach at Santa Fe Preparatory is doing a lot of juggling of personnel these days. Ross played 21 girls in a 4-0 win over Capital in Prep's opening round game of the Santa Fe City Soccer Tournament on Wednesday at Jaguar Field.

"I've got more P.E. teacher in me sometimes," said Ross of trying to get players in games. "I have a boat-load of kids. I thought I was going to cut more down, but with our injuries, I think I'm going to keep them."

The bountiful bunch was effective, producing 21 shots to Capital's 2. Freshman Elizabeth "Ziggy" Lanman scored her first varsity goal. June Broadley and Sully Wilson also scored to make it 3-0 at the break.

"We're starting to play as a team and getting a lot better," Capital head coach Bobby Garcia said. "We have nine freshman on the team."

Devon MacLeod rounded out the scoring.

Prep (2-2) plays Santa Fe High on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Brennand Memorial Field.

SFHS, Horsemen remain in a tie

Only darkness won a boys soccer match between Santa Fe High and St. Michael's on Wednesday.

The continuation of the Santa Fe City Soccer Tournament might have to be continued at a later date after two periods and two overtimes couldn't decide it. And since it was too dark for a penalty kick on the Santa Fe High soccer field, a 1-1 tie will stand for now.

"If we remained tied after the tournament, we agreed to finish the game some time,"
St. Michael's head coach Merritt Brown said.

Andrew Borrego put the Demons up in the first half, on a 30-yard chip over St. Michael's 'keeper Arthur Dejarnette.

For St. Michael's, 1-0-1, Eric Fishback returned from a broken nose he suffered in the first half to assist Jeff Najjar in the second half.

"He took a ball, juked a defender and threaded a perfect pass through two defenders onto Jeff's foot," Brown said. "It was perfect placement."

BEIJING — The Milwaukee Bucks and the Golden State Warriors will travel to China in October to play two exhibition games, the NBA and Chinese Basketball Association said on Wednesday.

The NBA China Games tips off with the Bucks and Warriors meeting Oct. 15 in Guangzhou and Oct. 18 at the Beijing Olympic Basketball Arena.

The NBA will host events in the cities as part of its Sichuan Province earthquake relief efforts.

Duckworth died of heart disease

PORTLAND, Ore. — Oregon officials say an autopsy shows former Portland Trail Blazers center Kevin Duckworth died when his enlarged heart failed.

Duckworth died Monday at 44 on the Oregon coast, where he was on a goodwill tour for the team.

The Oregon State Police said the autopsy was done by Dr. Larry Lewman, a state medical examiner who concluded that Duckworth died of "hypertrophic cardiomyopathy with congestive heart failure."

Red Sox acquire outfielder Kotsay

NEW YORK — The Boston Red Sox acquired Mark Kotsay from Atlanta for a minor leaguer adding depth to their outfield one day after J.D. Drew went on the disabled list.

Kotsay hit .289 with six home runs and 37 RBIs in 88 games with the Braves. He arrived at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday before Boston's game against New York and was available off the bench.
