July 21, 1983: Los Angeles — Inspired by a spirit with a sense of humor and sanctioned by a winking state Legislature, Laughter Day is coming — and it's nothing to snicker at. A group called Seminars With Seth will celebrate the second annual Laughter Day at a picnic Aug. 1 at a park north of Los Angeles. The group takes its name from a spirit who's been known to keep his entranced psychic listeners in stitches. Jane Roberts, the medium who named the spirit Seth, says he last laughed on earth in the 1940s. It was Seth, she said who suggested Laughter Day. According to those who know him, Seth thinks people feel better when they guffaw.
