Angel Fire Resort, together with Red Bull and Bigfoot Productions, today officially announced the first-of-its-kind 12-hour, endurance downhill mountain bike competition. The event will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2008, at Angel Fire Resort in northern New Mexico. Branded “The Burner,” the competition will be open to any and all sport, expert and pro-class mountain bike riders, both men and women. Categories will include solo, duo and team entries. Over $5,000 in cash plus prizes will be distributed to first to third place riders in each category & class. First place winners in men and women's pro class solo category will also receive VIP trips to a premiere Red Bull event in the United States.
The Red Bull Burner will start at 9:00am and finish in the dark at 9:00pm. Winners will be determined by total number of laps in the twelve hour period. Riding after dark will require the use of approved front mounted bike lights. Three of Angel Fire's top bike park downhill trails will be utilized simultaneously for the event.
Festivities surrounding the event will include barbecue vendors combined with beer sampling from the top brewers throughout the Four Corners area, including SKA Brewery, Steamworks Brewing Company and the Santa Fe Brewing Company. In addition, there will be live entertainment, and mountain gear/bike-related retail. Immediately following The Burner will be an end-of-season party, dubbed “The Afterburner,” featuring live music from the band Iocane out of Moab, Utah and raffle prizes.

Cultural encounter days at Fort Union National Monument, a unit of the National Park Service include musical entertainment, a nature walk across the prairie, historical presentations, living history cannon and small arms demonstrations, and activities by interpretivere-enactors from the First New Mexico Volunteers, the Second Colorado
Volunteer Infantry, and the Artillery Company of New Mexico. Feature
presentations for the weekend event will include “The Life and Times of
William Bent” by John Atkinson and “The Long Walk”, by Ed Lee Natay, and “Comerciantes, Arrieros y Peones: New Mexican Contributions to Commercial
Developments in the United States, 1821-1880” by historian Susan Calafate
Boyle. On Saturday at noon, members of the New Mexico Territorial Brass
Band will perform music popular before and during the American Civil War.
Fort Union Staff will also be hosting a prairie hike on both days, starting
at nine o’clock in the morning. Park guides will take visitors into the
prairie and along the Santa Fe Trail. The hike will focus on the natural
environment of Fort Union and what travelers faced when navigating the
Santa Fe Trail. The hike also offers a unique view of Fort Union from the
north. Visitors who wish to participate on the hike need to wear good
walking shoes, sunscreen and a hat, bring water and a snack, and be
prepared to hike approximately two miles on uneven ground. The hike will
take around two hours and visitors are advised that there is no shade, so
to be prepared for warm temperatures and the bright New Mexico sunshine. The hike will be limited to 20 people and guides will be taking the first twenty to arrive each day. For more information, visit the Web site at www.nps.gov/foun or call 505-425-8025.

Orienteering
Orienteering is an international outdoor sport played by teams and individuals of all ages in scenic locations around the world. The sport is popular with runners, adventure racers, scouts, families, and outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds. New Mexico Orienteers hosts orienteering meets throughout the year, in Los Alamos, Santa Fe National Forest, Valles Caldera National Preserve, Aubuquerque, and
the Sandias. Meet fees vary by location but usually are under $10 per person. NMO hosts free or at cost training classes to improve your orienteering skills.
